2. Villa Tauro – The Astrological Park

By Maarit Laurento

We had a dream of an astrological café where you could drink coffee and have an astrological analysis without having to make an appointment, you could just pop in. A place where you could think about your life over a cup of coffee eating tasty pastries and enjoying social life around you. What could be nicer than to be able to reflect and analyse your life situation with an astrologer in the same way that you would visit coffee houses with your friends and talk about your relationships and life in general? It took seven years (!) to make the idea actually work out. But the idea was already in the making in 1997 when Astro Bar was founded. Its office at the street level was designed to be a café with a bar. Then we didn't offer coffee from our bar, we offered astrological analyses.

But the original dream of a café did not leave us in peace. In 2002 we found a farm 100 km from Helsinki, and when we moved there we knew that now our dream had a chance to become true. Villa Tauro was opened for the public next summer, in 2003. It is located in idyllic traditional farm surroundings close to the historical Ox Road in Somero, in the western part of Finland. The farm has been at the same place for 500 years and was an inn already in the 18th century and was an inn still in the 1920's. Now Villa Tauro is keeping up the tradition but with fresh ideas. The name could not be better. Taurus refers to tradition, farms and enjoying life's good side. Villa Tauro is, of course, also a language game: Ox Road is the oldest road in Finland (from the era of Vikings, 162 km long road crossing the western part of Finland from Turku to Hämeenlinna - and Somero is the centre of it). Villa Tauro is one of the oldest farms in the area. Curiously, when you drive from Helsinki to Somero you pass a village called, very appropriately, Ram Lake ('Aries lake').

Villa Tauro is a perfomance. The personnel is dressed up in an old farm style, hence Villa Tauro is a true experience, an ongoing summer theatre in fact! Yes, it all started as a summer café, a cosy place to make a spontaneous visit for getting a cup coffee and an astrological analysis. Sitting under the old oak trees, sun shining glitteringly through the leaves and a gentle wind blowing when people from all walks of life were analysed. The most amazing thing was that the clientele was so heterogeneous. Families, men, women, people of all ages, everybody could come in and with a cup of coffee enter the exhibitions or have a reading. People who only were familiar with magazine horoscopes stepped into a new astrological world and had a personal experience.

We still have a dream, we hope that Villa Tauro will become an experiential astrological park, and for that purpose we make enlargements every summer. In 2004 Leo Pavilion was reconstructed in the barn. Leo Pavilion has an exhibition of horoscope symbols and the solar system. Leo is referred to the Sun, hence the Sun Signs are shown as installations so that people could experience their own or their friends' horoscope signs and find new ideas to their lives. In addition, every summer a new exhibition is held there: in 2004 artist Puppi Caselius brought her planet paintings and last summer we had Malla Pohja's astrological clocks. This summer's exhibition is about traditional Finnish calendars, wooden sticks with Moon Phases from Anne Pöyhönen. Leo Pavilion provides also lectures and workshops. Every Saturday we have New Moon Afternoons where astrological ideas are reflected in a workshop. Renaissance events and other experiential happenings like horoscope dances have also been held in Leo Pavilion, since Leo is the sign of performers and performances.

Last summer Capricorn Chamber was reconstructed in a cowshed. The funniest thing was that because the cowshed has thick walls the chamber stayed fairly cool which fitted well with the nature of Capricorn. The exhibition held in Capricorn Chamber is of course about Cronos, time eras and calendars. The exhibition answers questions like why is Friday a Venus day, what happened when ten days were moved from the calendar in 1582 and what is the meaning of the Bethlehem Star.

This summer a new exhibition hall, Gemini's Yellow Cabinet, will be opened. As you might guess, there will be astrological magazines, a gift shop and many colourful jolly ideas.

Our dream does still not leave us in peace, the astrological park continues to grow. One day there will be a planetary garden, an observatory and a dark mystic cave for all Scorpions! You are warmly welcome to visit Villa Tauro in July - but you can already have a peek online at www.villatauro.com
