COMMENT: With just a week to go before the midterm elections, we are
facing a particularly treacherous time for the stock market. The Powers
That Be are using all means at their disposal to keep this market
afloat, and have thus far managed to do so in spite of some
disappointing earnings reports and some absolutely devastating figures
for new home sales, which showed the biggest drop in median prices in
three and half decades when the September figures were reported last
week. We kick off this week with a Neptune station and Mercury in
retrograde motion, which signals a high level of unrealistic
expectations and a high potential for short-term trend reversals that
can whipsaw all but the most cautious traders. The prudent course of
action would probably be to stay on the sidelines altogether, but this
situation is just too interesting for us to ignore. So we'll be getting
our feet wet in the markets during the next week or so, even though we
know we are risking getting our fingers burned as well.

MISSED CONNECTIONS
My phone rings. The caller ID says it's Patty. Her flight to Atlanta
must have arrived. I answer immediately, but the line goes dead.

"It's Mercury retrograde," I think, and return the call. I don't hear a
ring at all, just some strange beeping noises. I try the call again, and
get a circuits busy tone. A couple of minutes later I redial and get the
same result. Finally, after two or three more attempts, my call falls
into her voice mail. I leave a message. Mercury retrograde indeed.

My attention goes back to my computer, where I've been working for the
past five hours to resolve a strange software malfunction. I need these
calculations for my weekly market analysis, but the program just won't
cooperate. I try a couple of alternatives, but with equally
disappointing results. Nothing seems to be working right; it's probably
just more Mercury retrograde stuff. I shut down the offending software
and start scribbling out some calculations by hand, racking my brain for
an effective workaround.

The phone rings again. Her flight has indeed arrived, but not all of her
luggage. She has taken MARTA to her hotel, which has cut off all cell
phone communication while the train was underground. As far as I'm
concerned, it's just more evidence of Mercury retrograde at work.

BACKING UP IN THE SKY
The current Mercury retrograde period started on Saturday afternoon. It
lasts until November 17. It's already having the typical effects on
communications, computers, and travel, and we can expect it to have an
impact on the stock market as well.

In fact, this particular Mercury retrograde period will be especially
worth paying attention to, because it features a transit of Mercury
across the face of the Sun on November 8, right after the midterm
elections. While we get three Mercury retrograde periods each year, an
astronomical transit of Mercury is not nearly as common--there are only
about 13 of them in any century, and we won't get another one until May
9, 2016.

MARKET TRIGGERS
Transits of Mercury always take place at the inferior conjunction of
Mercury and the Sun, with Mercury traveling retrograde between the Sun
and the Earth. The transit on November 8 will be visible in its entirety
throughout much of the Pacific ocean, and on the West Coast of the
United States, with visibility at sunset in the remainder of North and
South America, and at sunrise in the Orient.

During this transit, Mercury and the Sun will be at 16°20' Scorpio, a
point which resonates with the natal charts for COMEX and for COMEX
Gold, as well as with the horoscope for the Amsterdam Stock Exchange and
with two of the charts for the New York Stock Exchange (the April 22,
1903 reorganization chart and the February 18, 1971 reincorporation chart).

THE TRANSIT TRACK RECORD
Based on an analysis of the Dow Jones Industrial Average during the last
half dozen transits of Mercury, it seems that this unusual phenomenon
mainly works to amplify the current behavior of the stock market, rather
than resulting in a dramatic change of trend.  The transit of Mercury on
May 9, 1970 took place with stock prices trending downward, and the Dow
dropped by 4.58% in the five trading days following the transit. The
market was also in a downward trend when the transit of Mercury occurred
on November 10, 1973, and once again there was an amplification of the
existing trend, with the Dow dropping 3.72% in the five days following
the transit.

1986 was an essentially flat year for the market, with stocks staying in
a fairly confined trading range for most of the year.  The transit of
Mercury on November 13, 1986 was basically neutral, with the Dow
dropping by 0.08% in the five day trading days following the transit. In
1993, with the stock market in a steady upward trend, the transit of
Mercury on November 6 brought the Dow up by 2.41% in a five-day period.

Stock prices had been trending upward for about a month when the transit
of Mercury of November 15, 1999 occurred. In the five days following the
transit the Dow rose by 3.06%. The most recent transit of Mercury
occurred on May 7, 2003,  And with the stock market in a steady upward
trend.  The Dow Jones industrial average posted a modest gain of 1.02%
in the five trading days following the transit.

THE TRADING OUTLOOK
When Mercury is in retrograde motion, we typically look for short-term
trend reversals, countermoves, and fake-outs in the stock market.
Things don't behave as they normally do, which makes Mercury retrograde
periods especially treacherous for trading, with apparent trends
suddenly disappearing and what seems to be congestion resolving itself
into jolting trend reversals. Thanks to the occurrence of the transit of
Mercury on November 8, however, we expect an even more atypical
situation during this Mercury retrograde. Even if we have a bit of a
pullback in stock prices during the coming week as uncertainty about the
elections holds sway, we are anticipating the market action from
November 8 through November 15 to bring prices up fairly substantially.

GRIDLOCK GETS ATTENTION
Our comments about the markets responding to the potential for
legislative gridlock were reprinted in the current (October 30) issue of
Barron's. We're always delighted to see the mainstream media taking our
work seriously, even though it's usually our political comments that get
the most attention, and not our attempts at astrological erudition.

ASTROLOGICAL DYNAMICS
With Sunday's Neptune station and a Venus/Poseidon conjunction to close
out the weekend, our expectation is that the trading week will start on
a fairly positive note. This market is definitely in an overbought
condition, so we can see profit-taking and some corrective action at any
time, but even so the astrological context is supportive of higher prices.

The trading week is framed with a Mars Chiron squares; a waning square
in geocentric longitude prior to Monday morning's opening bell and a
waning square in right ascension just after the closing bell on Friday.
These are both indicators of positive price action.

Monday's Sun/Poseidon conjunction is basically neutral as far as market
action is concerned, but the Mercury/Jupiter conjunction that evening
has a decidedly positive bias. That should result in a good advance in
equities on Tuesday, especially with the support of heliocentric Mercury
moving into Aries and the waxing Saturn/Admetos square. That's a rare
planetary configuration, but historically it has had a slightly positive
bias for stock prices.

We could get a real change of pace on Wednesday, or at least we can
expect to add some confusion to the trading outlook. The waxing
Mercury/Saturn square that morning is a positive indicator, but the
Mercury/Admetos opposition should bring prices down. On top of that, we
will have both Mars and Saturn crossing the 24 Line on the Universal
Clock that day, so we could be setting the stage for a powerful change
in trend. Even so, we would look for some trading congestion, and we
will be very, very suspicious of anything that looks like an intraday
trend.

Wednesday evening's waning Venus/Uranus trine sets a positive tone for
the trading environment on Thursday, but with a Void-of-Course Moon in
play at the opening bell we will wait until late in the morning before
committing ourselves to any market positions. On Friday the
Mars/Poseidon conjunction adds some positive juice to the waning
Mars/Chiron square in right ascension, so we expect an upbeat finish to
the trading week as we move into the weekend and the Full Moon.
Throughout this week we will be tracking geocentric fourth-harmonic
planetary lines (G,90,N,-2) for the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter,
Saturn, Chiron, Admetos, and Poseidon, using the Fibonacci/Galactic
Trader software from P.A.S. to follow the active planetary support and
resistance in real time.

Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
Many of history's most successful traders have clearly understood that
emotional equilibrium is the key to effective trading. Through Practical
Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony,
enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.

Our environment is shifting significantly now, from clarity to confusion
and from communication to deception. The experience can certainly be a
bit uncomfortable, but as much as we might like to remain anonymous,
there is little we can do to avoid recognition. We may wish that our
shortcomings and inept fumblings were invisible, put their persistence
is simply here to remind us to accept ourselves as we truly are. Our
absolute nature is best expressed through unbounded outpourings of
divine creativity, so that every apparent error becomes a joyful part of
the cosmic dance.  As we acknowledge that essence within us, we will
have much to celebrate!

"Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail
better." - Samuel Beckett

U.S. EQUITY TRENDS
All of the U.S. averages put in a positive showing last week, but showed
some signs of slowing as they approached the intense period of
astrological challenges that lies just ahead. As we noted last week,
because we are looking for technical confirmation of the astrological
factors we have not seen sufficient reasons at this point to alter our
basic trend assumptions. This does not, however, rule out the
possibility of a significant change in trend in the near future.

The Russell 2000 is still in a trading channel and remains on a May 15
short-term sell signal and a May 23 intermediate-term sell signal. A
daily close above 784 will reverse these indicators back to the buy
side, while a close below 614 will move our long-term indicator for the
Russell to the sell side.

Our indicators for the NASDAQ all remain on the plus side. The NASDAQ
Composite is now on a September 1 short-term buy signal, an October 13
intermediate-term buy signal, and an October 13 long-term buy signal. A
daily close below 2134 will flip our short-term indicator back to the
sell side, with a daily close below 2039 needed to bring the
intermediate indicator back to the sell side and a daily close below
2027 required for a reversal of the long-term buy signal.

In the S+P 500 we have August 18 buy signals in place for the short term
and the intermediate term, conforming to our long-term trend
assumptions. A close for the S+P below 1168 will signal a long-term
bearish trend, with a close below 1219 turning our intermediate-term
indicator bearish, and a close below 1261 generating a sell signal for
the short term.

S+P 500 -- Long-Term Bullish; Intermediate-Term Bullish; Short-Term Bullish
NASDAQ -- Long-Term Bullish; Intermediate-Term Bullish; Short-Term Bullish
RUSSELL 2000 -- Long-Term Bullish; Intermediate-Term Bearish; Short-Term
Bearish

STOCKS TO WATCH: LSTR, TOT, UNH.

Potential Candidates for Short-Term Trades

Landstar System Inc. (LSTR)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 03/05/1993; 09:30 a.m.
LSTR took quite a dip a couple of weeks ago as transiting Chiron
conjoined its First-Trade Midheaven, but it recovered nicely and is
currently finding good support on its 10-day moving average. Transiting
Saturn is about to form a quick opposition to First-Trade Saturn, so we
wouldn't be surprised to see a little bit of a pullback this week to
give us a good buying opportunity. After that, things really get
interesting for LSTR, with transiting Jupiter conjoining First-Trade
Cupido, First-Trade Pluto, and the First-Trade Descendant. That positive
barrage should give us a solid opportunity for a short-term trade, so
our plan is to add a long position in this stock toward the end of the
trading week. We will set our initial stop at 43.80.

Total SA ADS (TOT)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 10/25/1991; 09:30 a.m.
Even though oil and gas prices have calmed down considerably, TOT has
spent much of the last month in a solid upward trend. That may be due in
part to Jupiter's approach to its First-Trade Ascendant, but once
Jupiter completes that passage we don't see too much going
astrologically that will keep the price up. With transiting Uranus
slowing down to make a direct station conjunct the TOT First-Trade IC,
we could see some unsettling times ahead for these shares. Since
transiting Saturn is forming a sesquiquadrate to First-Trade Uranus as
well, we aren't expecting very positive news. There's also the added
kicker of the transiting Mars/Jupiter midpoint moving into position to
form a square with transiting Neptune; that particular configuration has
occurred eight times during the trading history of this stock, and each
of those eight times it has been followed with a price decline. Our plan
is thus to sell TOT short toward the end of this trading week; we will
set our initial buy stop at 70.80.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 10/10/1991; 09:30 a.m.
UNH has been trapped in a five-dollar trading range for much of the past
four months, and with transiting Saturn conjoining its First-Trade
Midheaven we wouldn't be surprised to see it retreat back to 48.00 or
lower during the next few trading sessions. That Saturn transit could
provide a solid base for an upward move after a bit of consolidation,
however, and we are also encouraged by transiting Uranus forming a
sesquiquadrate to First-Trade Mars--an aspect that could really
kick-start this stock. On top of that, we will soon see transiting Mars
crossing the UNH First-Trade Ascendant. That has happened 10 times
before in the trading history of this stock, and every single time it
has brought the price up decisively. We're betting that will happen
again, so we plan to add a long position in UNH to the Model Portfolio
near the end of this trading week. We will set our initial stop at 46.55.
