COMMENT: As we noted last week, we have
been expecting the current
Mercury retrograde to have some sort of impact on the stock market. That
expectation was rewarded in mid-week with a pull-back in prices, not
only in U.S. equities, but in markets around the world. While it would
not be uncharacteristic for the Mercury retrograde period to produce a
short-term countertrend lasting until about November 17, we still want
to wait and see what the markets do in response to this Wednesday's
transit of Mercury across the face of the Sun. Our guess is that the
positive tone to trading will resume by then, with a fairly dramatic
upsurge in stock prices being a real possibility.
ELECTION OR REFERENDUM?
The tension has intensified across the country and the politicking has
gotten hot and heavy as the U.S. midterm congressional elections have
gotten closer. With the margins between candidates narrowing with each
passing day, many pundits--and a lot of traders--are holding their
breath as they await the outcome. Voters go to the polls on Tuesday, and
there's much more at stake than just who will provide local
representation in Washington. In a very real sense, this election has
become a nationwide referendum on the Bush administration and its war
policies in Iraq and Afghanistan, its abridgment of constitutional
liberties in the name of combating terrorism, and its frustrated efforts
at revitalizing the domestic economy.
THE T-SQUARE TELLS THE TALE
Astrologically the current T-square pattern formed by Pluto, Hades, and
the North Lunar Node gives us a clear picture of what is really at issue
when the ballots are cast. Witte's Rules for Planetary-Pictures tells us
that this is a time of "connection with persons who disappoint, who fall
short of expectations," and suggests that the electorate is "eager for
or thinking about remedial measures."
Essentially, though, the entire turmoil around the elections is just
another byproduct of a retrograde Mercury at work. There's a great deal
of deliberate misinformation being spread, and a lot of misdirection
being inserted into the political propaganda right now. In
all-too-typical Mercury retrograde fashion, what's not being talked
about is often more important than what is actually being articulated,
as is evidenced by the mudslinging attack ads that have unfortunately
become the norm in American political campaigns. Fear mongering,
suspicion, innuendo, and implication of guilt by association have all
become the order of the day, and none of them provide substantive help
to voters who are genuinely concerned about issues or who seek to
evaluate candidates on the basis of their personal and professional merits.
What's perhaps most interesting to us is the fact that the elections
take place just a day before the transit of Mercury, which is, as we
noted last week, a fairly rare phenomenon. While we are eager to see
what happens at the polls on Tuesday, we are even more eager to see how
the results are evaluated on Wednesday, both by the news media and by
the forces that drive the markets.
NOT JUST NUKES
With North Korea now a member of the global nuclear club, it's
interesting to see the rest of the world beginning to take the nation
more seriously. Kim Jong Il only began to allow limited free enterprise
in his country in 2002, and efforts to get North Korea involved in
international commerce have been difficult to say the least. But some
savvy European business interests have already begun to explore ways to
open up commercial opportunities in the country, and we are almost
certain to see expanded efforts of a similar nature in the future.
From an astrological perspective, however, it will probably be about 11
years before North Korea really opens up as a commercial power to be
reckoned with. That's when the solar-arc-directed Sun will reach the
ascendant in the September 10, 1948 birth chart for the country, with
solar-arc-directed Uranus simultaneously conjoining North Korea's natal
Midheaven.
TURNING OUT THE LIGHTS
When Saturn activates the midpoint of Uranus and the transneptunian
planet Poseidon, it creates a planetary picture which the Uranian
astrologer Alfred Witte described as indicating the occurrence of death,
or "giving up the ghost." He noted that it symbolizes "expiring life or
light."
While we don't have any reports of deaths specifically connected with
the event, there were certainly a lot of lights going out over the
weekend when this planetary picture occurred. In fact, millions of
people across Europe were plunged into darkness by mass power outages
which kept parts of France, Germany, Italy and Spain in the dark for up
to 90 minutes.
Officials didn't publicly acknowledge the role of Uranus, Poseidon, and
Saturn in the blackouts, however. Instead they blamed "cold weather and
a lack of supply" for the interruption in service, while admitting that
they did not really know what actually caused the problem. It was the
worst blackout to hit Western Europe in 30 years.
AN END TO LOWER PRICES AT THE PUMP?
Gasoline prices in the US reached their seasonal peak on August 11, and
have been declining fairly steadily ever since. That's been a positive
economic factor, which is expected to provide a little bit of a boost to
the Republican Party in its efforts to maintain control of the U.S.
Congress during the elections coming up this week. Interestingly
enough, however, as we reach the eve of the elections, we have gotten
the sudden news that gasoline prices have leveled off and can be
expected to begin rising again in the weeks ahead. While it might be a
truly incredible coincidence that this shift in price trends is
coinciding with the congressional elections, somehow we're not entirely
surprised.

THE ECONOMIC CALENDAR
There's a fairly quiet week ahead on the economic front, so we expect to
see some rehashing of last week's numbers as traders assess the current
market opportunities. This week we will be watching for the latest
numbers on Consumer Credit, ICSC-UBS Store Sales, MBA Purchase
Applications, Import and Export Prices, the EIA Petroleum Status Report,
International Trade, Jobless Claims, the EIA Natural Gas Report,
Wholesale Trade, the Consumer Sentiment Index from the University of
Michigan, and the Money Supply.
Michael Moskow, the President of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank, will
be in the spotlight a good bit this week, with presentations to business
leaders in Chicago on Monday and at the Ball State Business Forecasting
Roundtable Outlook in Muncie, Indiana on Wednesday. Thursday will bring
an announcement from the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee. Both
Moskow and the BOE are likely to be upstaged by Fed Chairman Ben Shalom
Bernanke, however. He will be attending a conference in Frankfurt,
Germany on Friday, where he will be speaking about monetary aggregates
and policies.
ASTROLOGICAL DYNAMICS
The Full Moon and a Venus/Uranus trine in right ascension set a positive
tone for the beginning of the trading week. That upbeat energy is
reinforced on Monday by the heliocentric waxing biquintile between Venus
and Hades and by the waning Venus/Neptune square. Both of these aspects
typically bring stock prices up, but a bit of caution will be necessary
that day thanks to the Void-of-Course Moon, which will be keeping us on
the sidelines from active trading during the morning hours.
The Mercury/Venus conjunction in the middle of the trading day on
Tuesday is essentially a positive indicator for stock prices, with a
track record of boosting equities values a little less than two thirds
of the time. We suspect that it will be overshadowed on this
occurrence, however, because of the waning Jupiter/Hades quincunx and
the heliocentric Mars/Poseidon conjunction surrounding it. Both aspects
tend to bring stock prices down. But a retreat in prices on Tuesday
would only set the stage for a more dramatic rebound on Wednesday, when
the positive energy of the transit of Mercury over the face of the Sun
will get an extra boost from a waning Mars/Uranus trine and a
heliocentric Venus/Admetos opposition.
On Thursday the Sun/Neptune square is likely to add some positive
momentum to an already upbeat trend, leading into a fairly strong finish
for the trading week on Friday, with some added help from the
heliocentric Mercury/Venus opposition, the heliocentric Venus/Kronos
waxing biquintile, and the heliocentric Mercury/Jupiter opposition,
which all provide a potential boost for stock prices.
Throughout this week we will be tracking heliocentric fourth-harmonic
planetary lines (H,90,N,-2) for the Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn,
Neptune, Chiron, Admetos, and Poseidon, using the Fibonacci/Galactic
Trader software from P.A.S. to follow the active planetary support and
resistance in real time.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
Many of history's most successful traders have clearly understood that
emotional equilibrium is the key to effective trading. Through Practical
Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony,
enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets. As we move forward on the
spiritual path, we inevitably come to a time
in which we must confront our own shadow side, the part of ourselves
that we would rather keep hidden. New breakthroughs in consciousness and
newly refined perceptions compel us to unmask ourselves, giving us an
opportunity to bring healing and compassion to our former selves. We may
actually be surprised by the suddenness with which a shift takes place
within our hearts, letting us move dramatically from a stressful sense
of crisis into an amazed awareness that the Universe is giving us a
second chance.
"Good judgment comes from experience, and experience - well, that comes
from poor judgment." - A.A. Milne

GLOBAL EQUITIES MARKETS
Except for Sydney and Hong Kong, the world's stock markets took a
breather from the rally last week, with the Nikkei and US Transports
getting hit the hardest. On the plus side, the action in Australia
brought the All Ordinaries to yet another record high, while the Hang
Seng topped its all-time high from March 2000 to set a new record.

U.S. EQUITY TRENDS
With all of the U.S. averages losing ground last week, we found
considerable confirmation for the cautious attitude that we have been
espousing during the rally of the past few weeks. Even so, the
corrective action was not strong enough to alter our underlying trend
assumptions.
In the S+P 500 we have August 18 buy signals in place for the short term
and the intermediate term, conforming to our long-term trend
assumptions. A close for the S+P below 1168 will signal a long-term
bearish trend, with a close below 1219 turning our intermediate-term
indicator bearish, and a close below 1261 generating a sell signal for
the short term.
The Russell 2000 is still in a trading channel and remains on a May 15
short-term sell signal and a May 23 intermediate-term sell signal. A
daily close above 784 will reverse these indicators back to the buy
side, while a close below 614 will move our long-term indicator for the
Russell to the sell side.
Our indicators for the NASDAQ all remain on the plus side. The NASDAQ
Composite is now on a September 1 short-term buy signal, an October 13
intermediate-term buy signal, and an October 13 long-term buy signal. A
daily close below 2134 will flip our short-term indicator back to the
sell side, with a daily close below 2039 needed to bring the
intermediate indicator back to the sell side and a daily close below
2027 required for a reversal of the long-term buy signal.
S+P 500 -- Long-Term Bullish; Intermediate-Term Bullish; Short-Term Bullish
NASDAQ -- Long-Term Bullish; Intermediate-Term Bullish; Short-Term Bullish
RUSSELL 2000 -- Long-Term Bullish; Intermediate-Term Bearish; Short-Term
Bearish

honors the work of legendary trader W. D. Gann, it only reflects a small
portion of the wisdom that Gann brought to the markets during the last
century. For more Gann Plan trading insights be sure to read the free

STOCKS TO WATCH: CVX, PBCT, SKM, ZIGO.
Potential Candidates for Short-Term Trades
Chevron Corporation (CVX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 10/10/2001; 09:30 a.m.
With transiting Venus crossing its First-Trade Ascendant, CVX has
experienced a very nice price pop during recent trading sessions. We've
got transiting Saturn moving toward the First-Trade Midheaven as it gets
ready to make its station, however, which presents a situation that is
far more interesting to us. In all likelihood will see the CVX price
settle down a little bit, but our overall expectation is that the Saturn
transit will help create a solid base for a further price expansion. Our
plan is thus to go ahead and enter a long position in this stock early
in this trading week. We will set our initial stop at 65.70.
Peoples Bank Bridgeport Connecticut (PBCT)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 07/06/1988; 09:30 a.m.
There's a lot activating the PBCT First-Trade horoscope right now,
including Jupiter conjoining the First-Trade IC, Venus and the Sun
conjoining First-Trade Cupido, and Mars conjoining First-Trade Pluto. On
top of that, the transiting axis of the True Lunar Node is aligning with
the PBCT First-Trade Mars/Zeus opposition. All this action bodes well
for a further price surge for this stock, and it gets some extra support
from some unusual planetary configurations, like transiting Mars
conjoining the midpoint of transiting Saturn and Neptune. That pattern
has taken place eight times before during the trading history of this
stock, and each time it has triggered a price increase. Our plan is to
add an immediate long position in PBCT to the Model Portfolio; we will
set our initial stop at 40.00.
SK Telecom Company Ltd. (SKM)
NYSE: optionable
First Trade Date: 06/27/1996; 09:30 a.m.
SKM presents a very straightforward situation: transiting Saturn is
conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant, and forming a station as it does
so. That means it's time to sell this stock short; we will do so early
in the trading week, with our initial buy stop set at 27.85.
Zygo Corporation (ZIGO)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/13/1983; 10:00 a.m.
As Jupiter crossed the ZIGO First-Trade Midheaven last week, the stock
dutifully shot up to trade at its highest level since last May. With
Jupiter out of the way, however, we don't see much astrological support
for that kind of price. That's why we are planning to sell ZIGO short
near the start of this trading week. We will set our initial buy stop at
18.75.
